CPR and First Aid Training can save your business money. While training your employees is a significant investment, in the long run, it can actually save your company money.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in adults over the age of 40. Statistically speaking, a high number of SCA events occur at the workplace or job site. However, the survival rate can jump as high as 60% when CPR is administered in the first 5-7 minutes – and decreases 10% each minute that passes). Knowing what to do when an emergency occurs saves time and save lives. Especially with the national average response time of an Ambulance is 8-12 minutes. However, brain damage begins to occur within 4-6 minutes after a heart attack.
1 – Practical Benefits and Lower Insurance Rates
It will make employees more aware and vigilant of hazards they may encounter on the job which reduce the rate of injuries, meaning fewer workers will need to take time off of work. Which means you will not lose productivity. You can also avoid worker’s compensation claims if your employees know how to avoid injuries. Insurers typically like it the most when policy holders are prepared for worst case scenarios such as hospitalization or death. This holds true for employers who have prepared actions to reduce their risk, which is a reason to negotiate with insurers in terms of rates. Employers may actually find that they are eligible for discounts in premiums when they have properly trained CPR and first aid employees.
2 – Compliance with Local, State and Federal Requirements
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) standard for first aid training says: “In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid. Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available” [29 CFR 1910.151(b)]. OSHA clarifies that their definition of “in near proximity” means that emergency medical services must be available within 3 to 4 minutes if there is the potential for serious injuries that involve uncontrolled breathing, cardiac arrests or stopped breathing such as falls, amputations, or electrocutions. If the possibility of injuries is more remote, such as in an office setting, a reasonable response time may be up to 15 minutes.
3 – Employee Morale
CPR training for your employees can show them you care about them as people, not just employees who are doing a job for you. CPR training is one of the many ways companies can show their employees their health and well-being is a top priority. When workers feel cared about they become more motivated to work hard and produce.
4 – Can be done in office or on site to reduce downtime of Employees
CPR and First Aid Training can be done in the comfort of your home or workplace leading to less downtime of employees. A simple “Blended Learning” Course can be started at home on the employees own time and completed during their lunch break, or done in a morning or afternoon on the weekend.
5 – Additional Discounts
Employees and Employers may find they are eligible for discounts on other premiums such as Life Insurance and Car Insurance when they are properly trained in CPR and First Aid.
Employers should not wait for an accident or emergency to happen. They should take steps for prevention.
No matter your main reason for offering first aid and CPR training at work, your investment will build a better, safer workplace.
